Chapter 04 · 15 minutes · free sample

Your first useful session

A note you can actually use — with a complete example, an illustrative answer, and a finish outside the chat.

Allow about 15 minutes. The goal is a note you can actually use, not a perfect conversation with a machine.

Prepare the facts

Use a fictional name while practicing. Here are the facts: a neighbor watered your plants while you were away; you appreciated the help; you want a short, friendly note. Do not add your address or travel dates.

Read the draft

An illustrative answer: “Thank you for looking after my plants while I was away. I appreciated knowing they were in good hands. Your help meant a lot to me.” This draft is usable because it follows the facts and is short. It is not automatically your final note.

An illustrative revision: “Thanks for watering my plants while I was away. It was a relief to know they were looked after. I really appreciate your help.”

Finish outside the chat

Read it aloud. Change anything that does not sound like you. Copy it into a card or message, add the recipient’s name privately, and check who will receive it before sending. On a computer, select the words and choose Copy, then Paste. On a phone, press and hold the text. If selecting text is awkward, type the three sentences yourself.
